Creating a Winter Solstice Ritual
As the days get shorter and the nights get colder, it’s important to keep your practice new and exciting. The winter can be a time of great reflection and relaxation, and for many, it’s more important than ever to take care of your mind, body, and spirit during the colder months. Creating a Winter Solstice ritual can add new elements to your practice and remind you of warmer days to come.
Gather Your Supplies
To begin your solstice ritual, you’ll need:
- A few candles. Adding essential oils to your unscented candles is a great way to incorporate winter scents into your ritual, including clove and cinnamon. Or, you could use the Icy Glow Candle from our December Winter Solstice Box.
- Your favorite crystals
- A notebook for writing down your intentions
- A comfortable seat and a safe space to light the candles
Set & Cleanse the Space
Set up your supplies in a comfortable and quiet space. The candles can be placed in front of you in a safe area where they can be lit. The goal of this ritual is to welcome in the light of the coming seasons, so feel free to turn any overhead lights off and allow for this ritual to be done entirely by candlelight. Place your crystals throughout, or keep them by your side for your meditation.
When your space is set up, cleanse it with your favorite incense or herb bundle. This is to clear out any negative or stagnant energies and create a space to welcome new energies into your life. Feel free to keep this burning throughout your ritual, as well.
Prepare to Welcome in the Light
With your sacred space established and the energy cleared, begin by sitting in a comfortable position. Close your eyes and begin to focus on your breathing. Feel the breath expand inside you, reaching all the way to the tips of your fingers and toes. Let this life force fill you and revitalize your spirit.
When you are ready, begin to think of what intentions you’d like to set for yourself in the coming months. Think about what lights your inner flame and excites you. Visualize yourself living these intentions out. Imagine how you feel in that moment and what you may be experiencing around you. Open your eyes and write what you’ve seen in addition to the intentions you’d like to set. Be as clear and as detailed as possible. When you have finished, sit for a few breaths in gratitude. Remind yourself that you are loved and that your guides are working in your favor, and thank these energies for all they have done for you.
Make Your Practice Your Own
Allow your ritual to be your own. Include crystals that align with your intentions, or set up an altar devoted to the season. An altar for the Winter Solstice could include offerings from outside such as pinecones, pine needles, and even snow.
Creating a simmer pot can be a great way to add the sweet aromas of the season to your space. To do this, all you need is a pot, water, and a combination of oranges, apples, cinnamon sticks, clove, star anise, or other herbs and spices that call to you. You place the pot of water onto the stove and carefully add all the ingredients to the boiling water. Bring the pot to a simmer and let the seasonal scents fill your space.
Your practice is what you make it, so turn it into something that fills you with joy and reminds you of the magical being that you are. Solstice Blessings!
