After a long day at work, a lot of us look forward to coming home (or closing the laptop if you’re working remotely) and unwinding. Releasing after the end of the day is so important for our well-being rather than carrying these feelings over into the next day. Creating the time to transform your home into a sacred space can encourage you to be productive in other ways after the work day ends and prioritize your spiritual or self-care practice. Learn how you can turn your place into one that feels like home for your mind, body, and spirit.

Incorporate Items That Speak to You

We tend to accumulate so much over time, from items from our childhood to things that we are drawn to as we grow and are able to purchase decorative items to place in our homes. As you begin this home transformation process, begin by taking all of your items into account. Do these pieces speak to you? Are you indifferent about whether or not you keep it displayed or hidden away? Determine which pieces in your home are the ones that mean the most, and place the others aside to be sold, donated, or swapped.

Once you’ve created space, you can either leave it and enjoy the easier energy flow between your home, or you can go out and find new pieces that you really love. Thrifting is a great way to explore your local neighborhood while repurposing furniture and giving unique pieces a new home. Just make sure to cleanse your new pieces when you bring them home to clear any leftover energy from its previous home.

Transforming your home is all about what feels good to you, so don’t be afraid to express yourself wholeheartedly. This is where you spend so much time, so you want to feel as comfortable as possible when you are in that space.

Create an Altar

Creating an altar is a great way to dedicate space to your practice. There are many ways to build an altar, so first, determine its purpose. Is this for your ancestors or to create a space for your current practice? Are you paying homage to the elements or any deities? Does the altar have a purpose (abundance, self-love, intuition)? Feel free to create several altars if these are all speaking to you in different areas around your home.

Before you begin to construct your altar, cleanse the space where it will sit with your favorite incense or burning bundle. Once your altar is cleansed, you can decorate it and set up your items however you’d like. If you’re creating an altar to bring in abundance, for example, you may want to include items such as prosperity oil, a few dollar bills or coins, a green or gold candle, and crystals such as pyrite or malachite.

Add a Little Greenery

Plants are a great way to welcome life into your home while helping to purify the air and boost your mood. Monsteras, Boston Ferns, Ivy, Spider Plants, and Peace Lilies are just a few varieties that you can begin to research and adopt. If you have not been gifted with a green thumb, there are still several varieties of plants that you can find that are low maintenance and require little care. Houseplants such as the ZZ Plant, Snake Plant, Pothos, and Succulents are all great places to start.

Utilize All of Your Space

If you are in a smaller home or apartment, feel free to utilize all of the space that you have. Window decals can be placed to shine rainbows throughout your home, or shelves can be hung for more storage or decorations. A broom can be hung over your door to save space while protecting your home from negative energy. Tap into your creative mindset and see how you can rearrange your home to work in the best way possible for you.
